Living near Athens, Georgia, home of the University of Georgia Bulldogs, Coleman Benko had no trouble choosing his team on Saturdays. Finding the right team for his advisory practice proved more complicated.
Coleman Benko had already been through enough firm transitions to know exactly what he didn't want. After years inside captive environments at a large financial advisory and a large independent wealth management practice, he saw a pattern: the frustrations were structural. Proprietary products weren't portable. Payout grids shifted without warning. Incentive structures were built to serve stockholder returns, not client outcomes. “When I realized the product available in the marketplace was better for the client than what I could sell at my old firm — that was it. They were worried about their bottom line, not clients and not advisors.”

His path to SFA Partners came through the Blueprint RIA platform, via a referral from a Schwab contact. He came for the RIA infrastructure. The environment and culture were the fit he had been looking for.
He came to SFA Partners with a clear checklist and some pointed questions. But the question that mattered most when evaluating SFA had nothing to do with platforms. It was about ownership. Benko asked directly about the firm's corporate structure and what it would take to sell or merge the company. Having already been moved through acquisitions he didn't choose, he had no interest in finding himself back at a big firm again. “I didn't want to get acquired again. For me, it's peace of mind — the control and autonomy to build what I want without walking in one day to find everything's flipped on its head.”
In an industry increasingly dominated by private equity roll-ups, Benko saw real value in a firm fiercely committed to staying independent. That commitment was the final piece.
Today, as President and Financial Advisor of Coleman Benko Financial Services, he also has a clear view of what SFA needs to do next. Growth creates momentum. When the right advisors choose SFA Partners and that story gets told, others start asking what's going on over there. Benko wants to be one of the reasons they ask. “Success breeds success. You bring on a new team — that's your window to create as much momentum as possible. The more people see it, the more they wonder what's going on over there.”
